*** Local Caption *** A Cornish fisherman caught a rare species of deep sea crab normally found at depths of up to 3km. Skipper John Walsh pulled the giant box crab, only the seventh recorded specimen found in British waters since records began in 1900, up in his nets while fishing 75 miles west of Padstow.
The crab has a claw span of more than a metre. It is recovering in a specially chilled tank at Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay. Matt Slater, from the aquarium, says:
‘It is one of the oddest crabs I have ever seen. It has weird eyes on stalks which look like bicycle handlebars and a strange pair of backward-facing pincers’ – the crab with Blue Reef Aquarium staff Matt Slater and Sara Jones – 09 May
